Attorney Roberta Kaplan landed a major victory for the LGBTQ movement by successfully arguing for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act before the Supreme Court. Gloria Steinem, a 2015 Library Lion, has championed women for decades, and immeasurably advanced women’s rights. At LIVE, they come together to launch their new books: Kaplan’s Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA, and Steinem’s My Life on the Road.




GLORIA STEINEM is a writer, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. She now lives in New York City.

ROBERTA (Robbie) KAPLAN, a litigation partner at Paul, Weiss LLP, represented Edie Windsor in the landmark case of United States v. Windsor in which the Supreme Court ruled that a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act violated the Constitution. The consequences of the Windsor decision were both rapid and profound. Dozens of courts throughout the United States held, relying on Windsor, that gay couples should be accorded equal rights under the law, including the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges. Kaplan most recently brought a case challenging the gay adoption ban in Mississippi.
